The Lister Block - The Dark Before the Light

The Lister Block has been loved, hated, discarded, fought over.

A retail and commercial building built in 1923, the Lister Block became of symbol of Hamilton. A remarkable past. A challenging present.

Despite this, the building survived. Today, as it is about to re-open after a careful restoration, it's time to celebrate not only a heritage victory, but also as a new symbol of what Hamilton values as we move forward.

This video, produced by Hamilton HIStory + HERitage, provides a glimpse inside the Lister Block shortly before the renovation began. It features remarkable photographs from Nali, presented in loving memory of David Bahadur.

Back in the '70's, the company I worked for had an office in the Listor Building facing James Street. Eaton's was still there across the street. I'm pleased to see the restoration but would not feel safe in the area after dark.

The Lister Block has always fascinated me and it was heartbreaking to see it's decline over the years. As I watched the video, it almost brought tears to my eyes when I saw the level of decay and disrepair. With the accompanying music, it evokes a feeling of sadness and despair, almost as if you're grieving the loss of a loved one. I have since witnessed the rebirth of the Lister Block and am amazed at the time, effort, love and workmanship that has gone into restoring the building to it's former glory. It truly fills my heart with gladness that so many people saw the beauty and potential of this landmark and by bringing the Lister Block back to life, have restored by faith and pride in this great city. My only hope is that the same determination, time and money that was put into resurrecting this building, can be applied to other ailing structures throughout Hamilton. My congratulations and heartfelt thanks to all involved in this project.
